BIOGRAPHY

Stephen Mager, D.M., is a composer and conductor whose career reflects a sustained commitment to music as a living and expressive art. Over decades of creative work, he has developed a distinctive voice rooted in historical awareness, textual sensitivity, and a deep understanding of the human voice.

His compositional output spans sacred choral symphonies, vocal and operatic works, chamber music, and orchestral repertoire. While stylistically diverse, his music is unified by a clarity of intent and an emphasis on lyricism, color, and structural balance. Drawing on historical forms and idioms while speaking in a contemporary musical language, Dr. Mager’s works seek to honor tradition without imitation, offering performers music that is both intellectually engaging and emotionally direct.

Central to Dr. Mager’s work is an enduring relationship with performers and ensembles. His experience as a conductor, pianist, and organist informs his writing, resulting in music that is crafted with practical insight and a keen awareness of vocal and instrumental forces. His compositions have been performed by professional and academic ensembles throughout the United States and are published by Oxford University Press and MorningStar Music.

ARTISTIC LEADERSHIP
Dr. Mager served for many years as Artistic Director of the Masterworks Chorale, where he led ambitious programming and commissioned new works that expanded the ensemble’s artistic scope. He has also served as Composer in Residence with the Bach Society of Saint Louis, an association that has resulted in several significant premieres and performances of his music.
